When I created the first version of this piece in 2022, it was much simpler. I used the same gold paint pen on black sketchbook paper. A few sparse lines and I called it finished. It used to resemble more of a mask or a face. However, in 2024 I was unsatisfied with it, and later took a different approach. I went much heavier with the gold paint, drawing over the original design and adding plenty of new patterns and flourishes. I was initially unhappy with the new version as well. I thought that I’d gone overboard with the gold, and unfortunately you can’t undo something so drastic. But in the end I grew to like it more and more. I enjoy how parts of the original can be seen through the gold - the texture imprinted on the paper itself. A friend of mine named Atlin took a liking to this one, so I gave it to her as a gift on NYE 2026
